Shelton Public Schools, located in Connecticut, has been recognized by the state as Schools of Distinction for its success in improving student growth and academic performance. Four of its schools earned top ratings from the state recently, thanks to the district's dedication to data-driven instruction and innovative programs such as Wit & Wisdom® and Eureka Math²®.
Connecticut schools are named Schools of Distinction when their performance and/or growth, as measured by the Connecticut Next Generation Accountability System, places them within the top 10 percent of all schools across the state. The district's principals credited the dedicated teachers with the success and cited the impact of programs such as Wit & Wisdom and Eureka Math² on student learning.
"The growth we saw in the students was amazing,” Booth Hill Elementary Principal Dina Marks said in the Connecticut Post.
Teachers commented on the improvements in students’ writing abilities this year since implementing Wit & Wisdom. “The students seemed to be writing at a higher level earlier in the year, which extended through the end of the year to challenge the students," Marks said.
Long Hill Principal Andrea D’Aiuto praised the staff, students, and parents for her school's success, saying, “It is through the hard work and dedication of our staff that accomplishments like this happen. Academic and social-emotional success continues to be at the forefront of all we do.”
We have featured Shelton’s work twice recently:
- This post features the reflections of Kristin Santilli, Shelton's director of curriculum, instruction, and data for PK–12, who wrote a Special Ed TODAY post. According to Santilli, the district has seen the inclusion percentage of its students with Individualized Education Programs jump from about 60 percent to 91 percent after switching to Eureka Math², Wit & Wisdom, and Geodes®.
- In this post, district and school leaders have also discussed the positive early impact of switching from Lucy Calkins's workshop model of instruction to Wit & Wisdom, Geodes, and Fundations (Wilson Language Training). With these changes, Shelton Public Schools continues to set the standard for academic success in Connecticut.
We congratulate Shelton Public Schools for its statewide success in improving student growth and academic performance. Through its commitment to data-driven instruction and innovative programs like Wit & Wisdom and Eureka Math², the district is ensuring that its students are prepared for success in school and beyond.
