The Wall Street Journal Spotlights Eureka Math® from Great Minds®

Wednesday, June 19, 2019
—A story in The Wall Street Journal describes “drastic” student achievement gains at a small Queens elementary school that uses Eureka Math from Great Minds. The piece, “New Math Curriculum Counts for This New York City School,” available here (subscription required), includes the following highlights:

Teachers at P.S. 38 Rosedale say their success with Eureka Math “shows just how much picking the right curriculum counts.” “[Eureka Math’s] good reviews from [the independent nonprofit] EdReports.org influenced teachers at P.S. 38,” who used Eureka Math in one Grade 3 class in fall 2016 before expanding its use to all of Grades 3 and 4 in fall 2017.  Its fifth-graders use it, too.

“While a range of factors affect achievement, … P.S. 38’s faculty give generous credit to their new math program. ‘The curriculum is very rigorous and thorough, and develops students’ number sense,’ said principal Julia Soussis. ‘They didn’t learn by rote.’ “

“About 73% of [P.S. 38’s] third-graders passed state tests last spring, up from 30% three years ago.”

“Last spring 50% of its fourth-graders passed state tests in math, up from 30% the year before.

“Many still struggle academically, but the improvement is noteworthy, as most city students lag behind expectations in math. Nearly all children at the school, which sits near John F. Kennedy International Airport, are black or Hispanic. About half face economic hardship.”

Great Minds created Eureka Math after winning a contract from the New York State Education Department to develop an innovative new content-rich mathematics curriculum. Previously known as EngageNY Math, the entire Grades PK–12 curriculum is available online for free. But many schools and districts order additional resources, such as printed books, and seek professional development from Great Minds to support their educators’ implementation of Eureka Math.
