Friday, August 2, 2019—Great Minds® is now shipping custom Investigation Kits to support its top- rated science curriculum, PhD Science™. Designed for the cost-conscious classroom, the Kits provide students with tools to create models, observe phenomena, gather data, and explore science for themselves.
Scientific investigations are a key component of PhD Science. Rather than merely memorize facts, PhD Science students acquire deep, lasting understanding of scientific concepts through evidence-based learning and hands-on activities.
“PhD Science inspires students to wonder about the world and empowers them to make sense of it,” Great Minds CEO Lynne Munson said. “With Investigation Kits, PhD Science students are makers in the making, designing models that develop their understanding of fundamental scientific ideas. Students love building their own pinwheels to blow on, witnessing energy transfer firsthand rather than just passively reading about it.”
The Kits’ components, including a custom circuit set, were carefully selected and tested to meet the learning goals of each module. The Kits also provide lists of needed easy-to-find items, such as rubber bands, so teachers can affordably source them on their own.
The Kits and the PhD Science curriculum are available for Grades 3–5 for the 2019–2020 school year. Kits for Modules 1 and 2 for the first half of the school year are shipping now. Kits for Modules 3 and 4 for the second half of the year will ship in November.
A full K–8 PhD Science curriculum is in development. Grades K–2 will be ready to pilot in the 2020–2021 school year, with Grades 6–8 to follow.
Like all Great Minds curricula, PhD Science is the creation of experienced teachers who know what sparks curiosity and inspires deeper learning. Great Minds pilots the lessons in classrooms and uses teacher feedback to refine the materials. Diverse student populations in more than 900 classrooms across the country piloted PhD Science. The curriculum is based on A Framework for K–12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards.
PhD Science is the only science curriculum rated Tier 1 by the Louisiana Department of Education, which is highly respected for its curricular leadership. Great Minds is the creator of Eureka Math®/EngageNY Math and Wit & Wisdom®, which are both also rated Tier 1.

Chad brings more than 23 years of experience in communications to Great Minds. He has served in three state education agencies, which included time assisting New Mexico’s secretary of education with the adoption of new education reform initiatives; serving as the communications director at the Washington, D.C., Office of the State Superintendent of Education; and working as an assistant to the Florida Commissioner of Education. Chad also worked at the U.S. Department of Education from 2004 to 2009 and served as the deputy assistant secretary for media affairs and strategic communication during his final two years there. Chad is a native of Bloomington, Ill., and graduated from Florida State University.
