Response to intervention (RTI) is an approach educators use to identify and support students’ individual learning needs. It begins in the classroom with high-quality instruction and universal screening of students and progressively increases levels of support as needed to help students succeed.

Tier 1: High-quality classroom instruction, screening, and small group support

  • All students receive high-quality, research-based instruction.
  • All students are periodically screened to establish a baseline and to identify students who need additional support.
  • Students who need support receive supplemental classroom instruction.
  • If students do not show sufficient progress within a specified period, teachers move on to Tier 2.

Tier 2: Small group, targeted intervention

  • In addition to regular classroom instruction, students receive increasingly targeted instruction in a small group setting.
  • If students do not show sufficient progress, teachers move on to Tier 3.

Tier 3: Individual, more intensive intervention

  • Students receive individualized interventions targeting specific skills identified in the previous tiers.

To effectively implement RTI, teachers need additional high-quality resources. To explore Eureka Math’s support and intervention strategies, check out the Eureka Math® RTI Webinar Series. This two-part webinar discusses practical ways you can use curriculum content for Tier 1, 2, and 3 interventions.

Webinar Series Overview

This free webinar series explains how to use resources in the Eureka Math curriculum to administer interventions that meet the needs of your students. The intervention process allows teachers to identify each student’s last point of success and to help them move toward mastering grade-level content.

Part I: Tiers 1 Interventions

Part II of the series reviews examples of Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention strategies and answers the following questions:

  • What is RTI?
  • What are some Tier 1 Intervention strategies?
  • What Tier 1 RTI resources are available?

Part II: Tiers 2 and 3 Interventions

Part II of the series reviews examples of Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention strategies and answers the following questions:

  • What are some best practices for RTI in math?
  • How can I plan for and support students who are working significantly below grade level?
  • What are some Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention strategies?

Study Questions

The webinar discusses how educators can use Eureka Math to provide interventions for the RTI protocol. As your professional learning community discusses the webinar or as you engage in individual reflection, think about your students’ needs, your classroom setup, and how your school’s existing practices and procedures compare to the strategies shared in the webinar.

Think about the following questions as you consider how you can use each step of the RTI process to support your students:

Part I: Tier 1 Interventions

  • What scaffolds do you currently use to support Tier 1 interventions?
  • How will you use data to guide your intervention planning? What assessments will you use?
  • What additional supports might you need for successful Tier 1 intervention?

Part II: Tiers 2 and 3 Interventions

  • What structures do your school have to support Tier 2 and 3 students? How will you use them?
  • What adjustments to this model are necessary to meet the needs of your students?
  • How will you know when your interventions are successful?
