Students’ social and emotional well-being is intimately connected to their academic success. When students feel a sense of belonging and significance in their classroom and school environments, they have more autonomy over their learning. Research has demonstrated that students succeed when their emotional needs are met and struggle when these needs are not met.

So how does PhD Science^®integrate social-emotional learning with science instruction?  In this month's implementation tip, you’ll hear from Tori Soileau, regional director of implementation support, who’ll discuss the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) in science and walk you through the  SEL competencies identified by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning. You'll gain an understanding of the SEL competencies and see where these competencies are embedded in the curriculum.

Tori Soileau

Prior to joining Great Minds, Tori Soileau was an elementary school classroom teacher in Louisiana public schools. In her last year teaching in the classroom, Tori had the opportunity to pilot PhD Science in her third-grade classroom. Tori’s classroom transformed during the pilot, and students grew in ways that she could not have imagined because of PhD Science. That spring, Tori joined the team as a summer associate to spread her knowledge and passion with other educators through professional development. Tori officially joined Great Minds as a full-time member in May 2019, now serving as the regional director of implementation support. Tori is passionate about supporting districts for a successful implementation, finding solutions for teachers, and helping all students realize they are capable of greatness. She lives in Baton Rouge.
