HIGH-QUALITY CURRICULA

Built for Florida Teachers & Students

From the creators of Eureka Math®

Wit & Wisdom® Florida Edition is a comprehensive English language arts curriculum for Grades K–8 that not only aligns with Florida’s B.E.S.T. standards—it also brings their vision to life.

For Grades K–2 Wit & Wisdom®, Geodes®, and Wilson Language Training’s Fundations® come together to provide high-quality early literacy instruction. Wit & Wisdom builds language comprehension and communication skills, and Fundations® focuses on foundational skills, with an emphasis on decoding, encoding, and spelling. With Geodes, students have extensive opportunities to practice decoding skills and build the fluency, vocabulary, and background knowledge needed for true reading comprehension.

For Grades 3–5 Wit & Wisdom and Wilson Language Training’s Fundations® (Grade 3 only), along with Wilson Cursive® Writing Kit, allow students to continue building word study/decoding skills and handwriting/spelling skills while also building knowledge and skills in reading, communicating, and vocabulary.

For Grades 6–8 Wit & Wisdom engages students in analysis of rich texts with layers of meaning while building on their knowledge of important topics through integrated instruction and practice in reading, communicating, and vocabulary.

Celebrate the joys of reading, writing, thinking, and speaking with a curriculum designed to build knowledge and enhance students’ creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills.

Teach more meaningful English.

LEARN MORE

Fundations®

Fundations® was designed as a foundational skills program to be used with a literature-based language arts program that does not contain a comprehensive and systematic approach to phonics, word study, and spelling.

Fundations® teaches accuracy of decoding, spelling and handwriting in a carefully integrated and scaffolded sequence that is taught to a mastery level.

Instruction is cumulative in Fundations®, and skills are presented sequentially in four levels from Kindergarten to 3rd grade. Each level is a year-long program universally designed to serve all K–3 students. It also includes a targeted instruction and intervention component for struggling students and is integral to a response to intervention model.

Each 30-minute lesson comprehensively addresses Florida’s B.E.S.T. Foundational Skills Standards.

The power of the Fundations® program lies not just in the teaching of foundational skills for reading, but in the integration of the components of reading, spelling and handwriting.

Fundations® takes a cumulative, systematic approach to the foundational skill of handwriting. Cursive skills in Fundations® are embedded in the Fundations® curriculum and thoroughly and explicitly taught in Grade 3.  Beyond Grade 3, cursive skills can be thoroughly taught using the Wilson Cursive® Writing Kit.

Wit & Wisdom Florida

Wit & Wisdom focuses on building students' knowledge across literature, history, science, and the arts with vertically aligned topics that ensure students are building a base of knowledge from Kindergarten through Grade 8. Wit & Wisdom provides

  • strategically selected sets of grade-level complex texts that are rich and engaging
  • an integrated approach to instruction for greater understanding, engagement, and literacy achievement
  • alignment to the B.E.S.T. standards

The Curriculum

Wit & Wisdom is composed of four modules per grade level, and modules consist of 30–38 lessons experienced in 6–8 weeks of study. Each module artfully explores a specific topic that allows students to develop a deep understanding of that topic while inspiring curiosity through reading and communicating about the topics.

Books Not Basals

With Wit & Wisdom, every text a student touches is authentic and of the highest quality. Students use these texts at every turn — to learn, and eventually master, essential elements of literacy. Instead of basals, students read books they love to build knowledge of important topics and master literacy skills.

Art of Wit & Wisdom

Just as great literature provides rich content for inquiry and analysis, visual art offers powerful opportunities to build content knowledge. This teacher resource describes how analyzing visual art can boost literacy in all students and includes art lessons, an art glossary, and more.

Multilingual Glossaries

Wit & Wisdom vocabulary glossaries are available as free PDF downloads from a teacher dashboard hosted at www.GreatMinds.org. Available in Arabic, Chinese, French, English, Haitian-Creole, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Urdu, and Vietnamese, each glossary includes content for grades K–8.

Geodes

Great Minds® and Wilson Language Training® collaborated to create a new collection of accessible, knowledge-building books for developing readers.

Geodes are the first early literacy texts that unite phonics with exciting content and beautiful art so students in Grades K–2 don't just learn to read—they learn to wonder, decode, and inquire about the world around them. With every Geodes text, knowledge opens up.

Geodes tap into the core strengths of both organizations: Wilson’s expertise in foundational reading skills instruction and Great Minds’ experience building students’ knowledge. The resulting narrative and informational texts allow students to apply their emerging decoding skills while also building content knowledge and vocabulary.

FOR TEACHERS

Teaching with Wit & Wisdom Florida Edition

As a Wit & Wisdom teacher, you will facilitate students’ learning through their collaboration with classmates and independent work.

Students learn and retain more when they productively struggle with the curriculum, doing the heavy lifting themselves. Your role is to facilitate. As they read (and reread) complex texts, you pose important questions for them to ponder, write about, and discuss. After you provide direct instruction, students practice the skill and receive feedback from you and their peers.

Deep understanding of each module and the Wit & Wisdom approach will empower you to fully leverage the curriculum to foster students’ knowledge and skill building.

FOR FAMILIES

Building Knowledge Outside the Classroom

Wit & Wisdom provides a great opportunity for families and caregivers to engage in conversations with their students.

We encourage you to learn about what they're reading and the topics they're becoming experts in.

Our Tips for Families (English) (Spanish) provide an overview of what students are reading and learning in each module at each grade level and provide recommendations for additional books to read.

Here are a few more ideas for families:
  • Choose a word of the week each week and challenge each family member to use it in conversation.
  • Read books alongside your students so that you can engage in book-club conversations.
  • Ask students questions about what they are learning: "What was the most interesting thing you learned today?" "What has been your favorite book this year?"
