What Is Social-Emotional Learning?
Thanks to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), educators have greater familiarity with social and emotional learning (SEL) than ever before.
The five CASEL core competencies—self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making—capture how students acquire and apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy, maintain good relationships, and make good decisions.
These competencies are critical to academic learning.
Educators increasingly seek to integrate SEL competencies into the school day but may not have time for a separate SEL curriculum in a packed schedule. The solution: Curricula that seamlessly interweave social, emotional, and academic learning, steeped in the research demonstrating the lasting, positive effects of such integration.
Our Eureka Math® (PK–12) and Wit & Wisdom® (K–8) integrate the five CASEL core competencies throughout grade bands. As the academic content becomes more complex, so does the complexity of social-emotional expectations. Students become prepared to succeed in all walks of life.
