Arts & Letters
Spanish Support Materials
Grade Levels K–8
Arts & Letters™ is designed to provide all students with high-quality grade-level content that builds both knowledge and skills. Embedded supports address multilingual learners' language needs before, during, and after core English language arts (ELA) lessons, with translated materials available to provide additional access points for Spanish-speaking students.
Prologue for Grade Levels K–8
Prologue™, a companion to Arts & Letters, provides tailored scaffolds that are taught before the core ELA lesson. With Prologue, students are prepared to engage with and master grade-level material. Embedded scaffolds support English learning, leveraging students’ home languages to support their English language development and promoting an asset-based view of home languages.
With Prologue, teachers are equipped with the tools and insights needed to deliver lessons effectively. Each lesson includes a module overview, key learning objectives, and planning guidance so teachers know exactly what to expect.
The Prologue Module Overview section identifies Spanish cognates for the module vocabulary list, as well as information about how the main grammar focus of the module is similar to or different from Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese. This support helps teachers identify possible connections or misconceptions for students who speak these languages.
The Prologue Language Connections section encourages students to make metalinguistic connections between their home language and English. Additional differentiation strategies help beginner students use and develop their English skills and provide extra challenges to extend learning for students who have existing English proficiency.
Arts & Letters Spanish Texts
With Arts and Letters, all students embark on a wonder-filled journey where they are captivated and challenged by the diverse stories they explore, people they meet, and perspectives they gain. As they build rich layers of knowledge, students see themselves in the texts and connect to the world around them.
The texts in each Arts & Letters module include content-rich books, with some texts available in Spanish. Additional knowledge-building Spanish titles are suggested to extend learning for each module topic.
More Videos
More videos are short, information-rich videos designed to help students grasp essential concepts from the text. By bridging gaps in assumed prior knowledge, More videos ensure all students, regardless of their experience with the topic, start on an equal footing.
These knowledge-building videos provide instructional moments with simple narration supported by primary sources and illustrations.
More videos are available in Spanish to ensure that all learners can access the rich knowledge building of Arts & Letters.
Language Support Notes
Differentiation and Language Supports provide teachers with strategies and supports to scaffold learning for students facing challenges with reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language.
Throughout the Teach book, Language Support notes guide teachers on when students can use their home language to support learning in class.
Family Resources
Arts & Letters invites all families and caregivers to participate in their student's learning. Our family resources are available in multiple languages, including Spanish, and support strong school–home connections for multilingual learners and their families.
Two family resources, Family Welcome Letters and Tips for Families, are available in Spanish and many other languages.
Provide an Equitable ELA Education for All Students
When ELA is taught effectively, all students build cross-content knowledge and literacy skills.
For Spanish-speaking students, an equitable ELA education is a pathway to help them grow into English-proficient learners and successful bilingual students. Our team is here to help you navigate ordering options and to answer any questions.
