Prologue for Grade Levels K–8

Prologue, a companion to Arts & Letters, provides tailored scaffolds that are taught before the core ELA lesson. With Prologue, students are prepared to engage with and master grade-level material. Embedded scaffolds support English learning, leveraging students home languages to support their English language development and promoting an asset-based view of home languages.

With Prologue, teachers are equipped with the tools and insights needed to deliver lessons effectively. Each lesson includes a module overview, key learning objectives, and planning guidance so teachers know exactly what to expect.

The Prologue Module Overview section identifies Spanish cognates for the module vocabulary list, as well as information about how the main grammar focus of the module is similar to or different from Spanish, Arabic, and Chinese. This support helps teachers identify possible connections or misconceptions for students who speak these languages.

Prologue Language Connections for English language learning

The Prologue Language Connections section encourages students to make metalinguistic connections between their home language and English. Additional differentiation strategies help beginner students use and develop their English skills and provide extra challenges to extend learning for students who have existing English proficiency.

Arts & Letters Spanish Texts

With Arts and Letters, all students embark on a wonder-filled journey where they are captivated and challenged by the diverse stories they explore, people they meet, and perspectives they gain. As they build rich layers of knowledge, students see themselves in the texts and connect to the world around them.

The texts in each Arts & Letters module include content-rich books, with some texts available in Spanish. Additional knowledge-building Spanish titles are suggested to extend learning for each module topic.

These knowledge-building videos provide instructional moments with simple narration supported by primary sources and illustrations.

More videos are available in Spanish to ensure that all learners can access the rich knowledge building of Arts & Letters.

Language Support Notes
