Geodes—K–3 Reading Foundations Practice
Build Knowledge and Foundational Skills Simultaneously for Emerging Readers
Geodes® help students read to learn while learning to read by pairing knowledge-rich content with phonics-aligned practice in engaging accessible texts.
Evidence of Impact
A study of grade 1 classrooms using Geodes showed significant fluency gains over the school year.
Building Comprehension Alongside Foundational Skills
Traditional phonics-aligned texts build phonics skills, but leave a critical gap. Students aren't gaining the comprehension skills proficient readers need. Geodes pair with foundational skills programs, build knowledge, and engage emerging readers, helping to close that gap.
Pair Decoding Practice with Content-Rich Reading
Geodes are knowledge-building, supplemental readers for grades K–3 that help emerging readers apply phonics and decoding skills to meaningful, content-rich texts.
Phonics-Aligned Texts Support Science of Reading-Based Instruction
Supports Structured Literacy Classrooms
Students build decoding proficiency and comprehension together, supporting Science of Reading-aligned instruction.
Pairs with Explicit Foundational Skills Programs
By mirroring taught phonics skills, the texts give students consistent decoding practice while building knowledge, complementing any existing foundational skills program.
Grows Accuracy, Fluency, and Comprehension
By developing the full set of skills proficient reading requires, students achieve stronger, more consistent grade-level outcomes.

“We've created a structure so that throughout the week students are participating in different types of reading of a Geodes book. By Friday, they are able to read the text fluently and with expression.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Geodes a program?
Geodes are sets of books that provide students with reading practice, supplementing an explicit foundational skills program and a core English language arts curriculum.
Are Geodes considered decodable texts?
Do Geodes align with the principles of the Science of Reading?
Yes. Geodes help young readers become skilled readers by allowing them to practice both word recognition and language comprehension skills in tandem rather than decoding isolated from comprehension.
Does Great Minds have an overview of the Geodes research base to share with partners?
Are Geodes informational texts aligned to science or social studies standards? Can you search for a Geodes text by standard alignment?
Do Geodes align to our foundational skills (phonics) program?
Does Great Minds recommend any specific assessments to measure students’ reading progress with Geodes?
No, we recommend that teachers consult the assessments embedded in their school’s foundational skills program or those required by their school or district’s literacy assessment system.
How can teachers differentiate Geodes instruction?
Teachers often plan small-group instruction based on students’ specific needs, such as grouping learners by the specific obstacles affecting their reading accuracy, fluency, or comprehension. These decisions are grounded in evidence from both foundational skills and knowledge-building instruction.
Inside Geodes supports this work by offering a range of options within the Book Notes, enabling teachers to tailor small-group instruction to meet the needs of their students.
Are Geodes compatible with LETRS®?
The Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) Suite is a professional learning program designed to provide early childhood and elementary educators with deep knowledge in literacy and language development and the Science of Reading.
LETRS is program-agnostic. It does not endorse any specific curriculum, product, or program, though many educators who have completed LETRS training find Geodes a natural fit to their research-aligned classroom instruction.
Can schools or districts pilot Geodes?
Geodes are not a core curriculum, so Great Minds does not offer a pilot module for Geodes. Some districts that want to build their understanding of Geodes have had success purchasing one or two classroom libraries to try in a few classrooms before making a larger investment in Geodes for the full district.
