Fluency Routines
First Weeks of School
At a Glance A 3–5-minute fluency routine starts every lesson with purpose. Start with Choral Response—it requires no materials and works at any grade level. Use the platform’s Routine Videos to learn each one quickly.
One of the simplest ways to set the tone for every math class is with a short fluency routine. These 3–5-minute activities at the start of each lesson build automaticity with counting and calculating, free up mental space for the deeper thinking that follows, and give students a confidence boost right from the start. Over time, fluency routines also become a classroom management tool—students know exactly what to expect when class begins, and transitions into instruction become faster.
Eureka Math2 includes four primary fluency routines, each designed for a different type of mathematical thinking:
Choral Response
Students call out answers in unison after your prompt. This routine builds quick recall and keeps the whole class engaged. It’s the easiest routine to launch on day one because it requires no materials—just your voice and a clear prompt.
Whiteboard Exchange
Students write answers on personal whiteboards and hold them up on cue. This gives you an instant whole-class formative check—you can see at a glance who’s confident, who’s close, and who needs support.
Count By
Students count aloud by a specified unit (twos, fives, fractions, etc.) to strengthen number sense and pattern recognition. Vary the starting point and direction to keep it challenging as the year progresses.
Sprint
Students work independently through a timed sequence of problems, then self-assess. Sprints are designed so that every student experiences success on the early problems while being stretched by the later ones.
