What is Great Minds?
Great Minds® is a Prekindergarten through Grade 12 curricula creator headquartered in Washington, D.C. A group of education leaders founded the organization in 2007 to define and encourage content-rich, comprehensive education for all schoolchildren.
In 2010, the organization released English language arts curriculum maps for Kindergarten through Grade 12 to help teachers implement the new Common Core State Standards using a rich base of literature. The maps caught on among teachers, who asked for a math curriculum reflecting the same principles.
In 2012, Great Minds won contracts from the New York State Education Department to create a curriculum that met the new standards while teaching math as a coherent body of knowledge, not just a set of skills. The organization enlisted classroom teachers, many of whom were parents, and mathematicians to draft the curriculum. The resulting curriculum for Prekindergarten through Grade 12 was released in phases from 2013 to 2014, and many teachers downloaded these free resources.
In 2013, Great Minds released Eureka Math®, an enhanced version of EngageNY Math that included additional curriculum resources, professional development, and parent support materials. Great Minds has continued to refine and add resources to Eureka Math, such as the digital assessment tool, Affirm. A 2016 RAND Corporation survey of teachers found that Eureka Math and EngageNY Math were the most widely used elementary school math curricula in the nation.
In addition, Great Minds created Wit & Wisdom®, a Kindergarten through Grade 8 English language arts curriculum, released in 2016; Geodes® books for emerging readers, released in 2018; and the initial grades of its science curriculum, PhD Science™, planned for Kindergarten through Grade 8, released in 2019.
Enlisting teachers as writers, Great Minds designed these curricula to emphasize the development of essential skills via content-rich, knowledge-building tasks. This approach is based on research showing what works to achieve these goals. The curricula are written for every student, including students with dyslexia, those who absorb concepts unconventionally, and English learners.
Eureka Math and Wit & Wisdom both earned high scores from the independent nonprofit curriculum reviewer EdReports.org. More than a dozen Eureka Math lessons were rated as exemplars by the EQuIP (Educators Evaluating the Quality of Instructional Products) initiative of Achieve, an independent nonprofit focused on raising academic standards and graduation requirements, improving assessments, and strengthening accountability. Great Minds is the only curriculum developer to have earned three Tier 1 ratings, the highest possible, for its math, English, and science curricula, from the Louisiana Department of Education, which is widely respected for rigorously evaluating curricula. Great Minds curricula are also widely praised by teachers, administrators, and parents in school districts across the country.
